July 18 — The United States Army and the Bangladesh Armed Forces are set to begin the annual Tiger Lightning 26 bilateral military exercise on July 19, continuing a long-running defense cooperation program aimed at strengthening operational coordination and military readiness between the two countries.
More than 160 service members from both militaries will participate in the exercise, which includes training in jungle operations, counterterrorism, and tactical combat casualty care. The program combines classroom instruction with field exercises and will conclude with a joint field training exercise.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Tiger Lightning is part of the U.S. Army Pacific’s Theater Army Campaign Plan, which seeks to enhance professional military relationships, improve interoperability, and strengthen the ability of partner forces to operate together in a range of scenarios.
First launched in 2017, the exercise was briefly suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic before resuming in subsequent years. It has since become a regular component of defense engagement between Washington and Dhaka.
The United States and Bangladesh have gradually expanded security cooperation in recent years through joint training, disaster response initiatives, peacekeeping support, and professional military exchanges. While the exercise focuses primarily on improving tactical skills and operational coordination, it also reflects the broader defense partnership between the two countries amid an evolving regional security environment in the Indo-Pacific.
Tiger Lightning 26 is expected to provide participating forces with opportunities to exchange operational expertise, improve readiness, and reinforce long-standing military-to-military cooperation.
