Staff Correspondent, Dhaka:
Switzerland‘s President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Thailand from October 15 to 17 is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations, as the two countries mark 95 years of diplomatic ties in 2026.
The visit, made at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is the first by a Swiss president to Thailand in 22 years. Parmelin will be accompanied by his spouse, Caroline Parmelin, and a Swiss business delegation.
The Thai government is scheduled to host a welcome ceremony at Government House on October 15, followed by bilateral talks, a joint press conference, and an official luncheon.
Discussions are expected to focus on trade and investment, the Thailand-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) free trade agreement, science and technology, human resource development, climate action, cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and multilateral affairs.
The timing is notable as Bangkok hosts the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, bringing international economic issues into focus alongside the bilateral agenda.
The visit also offers an opportunity to explore ways to expand commercial links and cooperation in technology and sustainable development. Progress on trade arrangements and other areas of cooperation could help translate longstanding diplomatic relations into broader economic engagement.
The previous official visit by a Swiss president took place in March 2004, when President Joseph Deiss met then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
While the anniversary provides a symbolic backdrop, the visit’s significance will ultimately depend on concrete outcomes in trade, investment, and wider bilateral cooperation.
