Bangladesh and China have signaled their intention to deepen defense and technology cooperation, reflecting the growing strategic importance of bilateral ties at a time of evolving geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific region.
The commitment emerged during a meeting between Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Prime Minister’s Defense Adviser AKM Shamsul Islam at the Armed Forces Division in Dhaka Cantonment, where both sides explored avenues to expand military collaboration, technology transfer, cybersecurity cooperation and advanced training opportunities for the Bangladesh Armed Forces.
Beyond conventional defense ties, the emphasis on technology transfer and cybersecurity highlights Bangladesh’s broader objective of developing a more self-reliant and technologically capable defence sector. Increased training opportunities in China could also contribute to enhancing the professional capabilities of Bangladesh’s military personnel while supporting the country’s ongoing armed forces modernization program.
For China, strengthening defense cooperation with Bangladesh aligns with Beijing’s efforts to reinforce strategic partnerships across South Asia. Bangladesh occupies a key geographic position on the Bay of Bengal, making it an important partner in China’s regional engagement and connectivity initiatives. Defense cooperation therefore complements the two countries’ already expanding economic and infrastructure partnerships.
The discussions also covered regional and global geopolitical developments, underscoring both countries’ shared interest in maintaining regional peace and stability. As strategic competition intensifies across the Indo-Pacific, Bangladesh continues to pursue a balanced foreign policy by engaging with multiple global partners while avoiding alignment with any single bloc.
Analysts say Dhaka’s approach is driven by national interests, focusing on capability development, technological advancement and diversified international cooperation. While China remains one of Bangladesh’s largest defense suppliers and a major development partner, Bangladesh has also expanded security and economic engagement with other countries, reflecting its policy of maintaining strategic balance.
The latest dialogue indicates that defense cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing is evolving beyond hardware procurement towards long-term collaboration in technology, cybersecurity and institutional capacity building.
