Senior Correspondent, Dhaka:
As traditional diplomacy increasingly incorporates cultural and public engagement tools, Bangladesh has once again turned to one of its most celebrated agricultural products—mangoes—to strengthen its relationship with Nepal.
Under its annual “Season’s Best Compliments” initiative, Bangladesh gifted more than 1,750 kilograms of premium-quality mangoes to over 360 distinguished recipients in Nepal, including the President, the Speaker, members of the Council of Ministers, senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders and civil society representatives.
The initiative, coordinated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu, reflects a growing emphasis on soft power and people-to-people diplomacy in Bangladesh’s foreign relations. While symbolic in nature, such gestures often help create goodwill that complements formal diplomatic engagement.
This year’s consignment featured Khirshapat mangoes, a Geographical Indication (GI)-certified variety renowned for its flavor and quality. Sourced from orchards in Chapainawabganj, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s mango capital, the fruit was transported through a carefully managed cross-border route to preserve freshness before reaching recipients in Nepal.
The significance of the initiative extends beyond the seasonal gift itself. Bangladesh and Nepal share longstanding historical, cultural and economic ties, and both countries have sought to expand cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy and tourism in recent years. Public diplomacy initiatives such as Mango Diplomacy help reinforce these broader strategic objectives by fostering positive perceptions among influential stakeholders and the wider public.
The embassy described the gesture as a reflection of the enduring friendship between the two nations, emphasizing that cultural and public diplomacy remain important tools for strengthening bilateral relations. By showcasing a signature Bangladeshi product, the initiative also promotes the country’s agricultural heritage and national brand abroad.
As South Asian nations increasingly explore non-traditional avenues of engagement, Bangladesh’s Mango Diplomacy demonstrates how cultural symbols and shared experiences can contribute to building trust, goodwill and stronger regional partnerships.
