Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt from Sunday carry significance beyond routine diplomacy, as Beijing seeks to protect its strategic and economic interests amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
In Egypt, Xi is expected to hold talks with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues. The visit comes at a sensitive time, with the Iran-US conflict disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and creating uncertainty in global energy markets.
The Middle East remains particularly important to China because of its energy dependence and expanding economic partnerships across the region. Disruptions to oil shipments can increase energy costs and create wider risks for Chinese trade and supply chains. Xi’s engagement with Egypt therefore offers Beijing an opportunity to strengthen relations with a key Arab state while discussing regional stability.
His visit to Kyrgyzstan carries a different but equally important dimension. Xi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit alongside leaders including those of Russia and Iran. His meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov is also expected to focus on economic cooperation and development.
Taken together, the two stops highlight China’s preference for maintaining engagement across competing geopolitical spaces. Beijing has close ties with Iran and Russia while also developing strong economic and diplomatic relationships with Arab countries.
Xi’s tour could therefore serve as a platform for China to reinforce its diplomatic role without directly positioning itself at the center of the conflict. At a time when the Middle East is facing military and economic uncertainty, Beijing appears focused on protecting trade routes, energy interests, and long-term partnerships while presenting itself as a supporter of regional stability.
