Filmmaker Mira Nair is developing a biographical film titled “Amri”, based on the life of pioneering Indian modern artist Amrita Sher-Gil. The project is positioned as an international production, with filming taking place across India and several European locations, reflecting the artist’s own cross-cultural life and education.

Amrita Sher-Gil, widely regarded as one of India’s most important early modern painters, was known for blending European modernist techniques with Indian subjects and themes. The film is expected to explore her artistic journey, identity, and personal life, including her upbringing in a culturally mixed household and her time spent in Europe during her formative years as an artist.

The film features an ensemble cast. Anjali Sivaraman plays the role of Amrita Sher-Gil. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is attached to the project in a supporting role and also serves as an executive producer. Other cast members include Jaideep Ahlawat, Emily Watson, Jim Sarbh, and Anjana Vasan, among others.

“Amri” marks Mira Nair’s return to large-scale feature filmmaking following her recent work in long-form storytelling. The production is described as a global collaboration, both in terms of cast and filming locations, reflecting the international life of its subject.

Further details regarding the film’s release date and post-production timeline have not yet been officially announced.
