Grace Meng Introduces “Safe Check-Ins for Immigrants Act”

U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng has introduced new immigration legislation titled the “Safe Check-Ins for Immigrants Act,” aimed at allowing immigrants to complete required check-ins with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) virtually instead of appearing in person.

According to the congresswoman’s office, the proposed legislation would permit the use of online platforms such as Zoom for routine immigration check-ins, following growing concerns over arrests taking place during scheduled appearances at ICE offices and immigration courts.

Rep. Meng stated that many immigrants complying with legal procedures have faced detention despite having no criminal records, describing the measure as an effort to provide safer and more secure access to immigration compliance processes. The bill was introduced amid reports of a significant rise in ICE enforcement actions during routine appointments.

The legislation has received support from several immigrant advocacy organizations, including the New York Immigration Coalition and the Asian American Federation, according to the official press release issued by the congresswoman’s office.
