COP31 Could Broaden Bangladesh-Türkiye Cooperation

Senior Correspondent, Dhaka:

Bangladesh and Türkiye have discussed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible participation in COP31, adding a climate-diplomacy dimension to the countries’ expanding bilateral engagement. The summit is scheduled to take place in Antalya from November 9 to 20.

The issue was raised when State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir met Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. While the two sides exchanged views on the prime minister’s possible attendance, no final decision was announced.

The discussion comes shortly after Tarique Rahman met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in New York, where the two sides discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and other areas.

Beyond COP31, the latest meeting covered high-level visits, defense cooperation, renewable and green energy, and opportunities for Turkish investment in Bangladesh. Kobir also invited Türkiye to participate in an international sports conference Bangladesh plans to host in early 2027.

The climate summit could therefore provide another platform for Bangladesh and Türkiye to deepen engagement across climate action, green investment, and broader economic cooperation. Bangladesh is already preparing its COP31 delegation and negotiating priorities.
