Visa Thaw Marks Renewed Momentum in India–Bangladesh Engagement

Sadik Sagar, Dhaka:

The ongoing efforts by India and Bangladesh to restore full visa services indicate a constructive shift toward rebuilding bilateral engagement after a period of disruption. While the process remains gradual, the direction points to a shared commitment to re-establishing normal travel, economic exchange, and people-to-people connectivity.

Bangladesh has taken an early step by resuming visa issuance for Indian citizens across all categories, including tourism, business, and medical travel. India, meanwhile, is proceeding in a phased manner, currently operating at around 15–20% of its pre-December 2025 capacity. By prioritizing medical cases and family emergencies, Indian authorities are ensuring that essential travel needs are addressed while administrative capacity is steadily expanded.

This renewed momentum comes in the context of political changes in Bangladesh following the transition from Sheikh Hasina to the government led by Tarique Rahman. Recent high-level interactions, including India’s participation in the new administration’s early engagements, reflect a willingness on both sides to maintain continuity and strengthen cooperation.

The resumption of visa services is particularly significant given the sharp decline in cross-border travel in recent years. The drop in Bangladeshi visitors to India—from over 2 million in 2023 to under 500,000 in 2025—illustrated the broader economic and social impact of restricted mobility. Encouragingly, Bangladesh has already issued more than 13,000 visas to Indian nationals since February 2026, signaling a positive trajectory.

Beyond travel, practical cooperation continues to underpin the relationship. India’s recent supply of diesel to Bangladesh during a period of global energy pressure highlights the importance of bilateral coordination in addressing shared challenges. Such initiatives contribute to building confidence and reinforcing interdependence.

Looking ahead, the expected arrival of Dinesh Trivedi is likely to support ongoing diplomatic efforts and facilitate further progress in visa normalization. His engagement could help streamline processes and enhance institutional coordination.

Overall, the gradual restoration of visa services reflects a pragmatic and forward-looking approach by both countries. As administrative capacity increases and diplomatic engagement continues, the outlook for fully normalized travel and strengthened bilateral ties appears increasingly positive.
