Dhaka-Muscat Talks Reflect Strategic Gulf Priorities

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka:

The latest bilateral engagement between Bangladesh and Oman reflects a broader effort by Dhaka to strengthen ties with Gulf partners amid evolving regional and economic realities.

During a courtesy meeting in Dhaka on Sunday, Omani Ambassador Jamil Haji Ismail Al Balushi met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, where both sides discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, labor mobility, culture and sports.

The discussion carries significance beyond routine diplomacy. Oman remains an important destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, whose remittances continue to support Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves and rural economy. Dhaka’s emphasis on sending skilled and semi-skilled workers indicates a strategic shift toward higher-value overseas employment rather than relying primarily on low-skilled migration.

Bangladesh’s reiteration of its zero-tolerance policy against illegal migration also reflects growing sensitivity among Gulf states over labor regulation and immigration compliance. By addressing the issue directly, Dhaka appears keen to maintain confidence among host countries and preserve labor market access in the region.

The meeting also highlights Bangladesh’s wider diplomatic balancing strategy in the Middle East. Dhaka praised Oman’s role in promoting regional peace and stability, signaling support for Muscat’s traditionally neutral and mediation-oriented foreign policy approach.

Oman’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy for the presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly further demonstrates increasing diplomatic coordination between the two countries in multilateral forums, where Bangladesh is seeking broader international backing and visibility.
