Tarique-Erdogan talks put trade and investment at the center of ties

Senior Correspondent, Dhaka:

New York: Bangladesh and Türkiye have signaled an effort to broaden their bilateral relationship, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan focusing on trade, investment, and wider economic cooperation during their meeting on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.

The meeting at the Turkish House on Tuesday came as both sides explored ways to consolidate existing relations while identifying new areas of cooperation. The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues and stressed the importance of continued coordination on matters of mutual interest.

The economic focus suggests that Dhaka-Ankara ties are being viewed increasingly through a broader commercial lens rather than being confined to their existing areas of cooperation. Discussions on expanding trade and investment could create scope for deeper private-sector engagement if translated into specific agreements and projects.

Turkish officials have also indicated interest in placing bilateral relations on a broader institutional footing, including expanded cooperation in investment and defense-related sectors.

For Bangladesh, stronger economic engagement with Türkiye could add another dimension to its efforts to diversify trade and investment partnerships. For Ankara, closer relations with Dhaka offer opportunities to expand economic engagement with one of South Asia’s major markets.

The meeting therefore provides a political framework for deeper ties, but the extent of its economic impact will depend on whether the two governments can convert broad commitments into concrete trade, investment, and cooperation initiatives.
