A planned naval exercise between China and Indonesia in waters east of Taiwan adds a new layer to the increasingly sensitive security environment surrounding the island. Although Beijing has described the drill as a routine exercise focused on communication and at-sea replenishment, its location gives the activity wider strategic significance.
China’s Defence Ministry said a Chinese warship and an Indonesian naval vessel will conduct a joint navigation exercise in mid-August. The drill is expected to improve operational coordination and practical cooperation while promoting regional peace and stability.
However, holding the exercise east of Taiwan is notable because China has been increasing its military and coast guard activities around the island. Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan, while Taipei rejects Chinese territorial claims and maintains that Taiwan’s future should be decided by its people.
For Indonesia, the exercise reflects its effort to maintain defense and diplomatic engagement with major regional powers without formally taking sides in the Taiwan dispute. Jakarta has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but more than 300,000 Indonesian migrant workers live on the island, giving Indonesia a direct social and economic interest in regional stability.
The exercise could therefore be viewed from two perspectives. Operationally, it is a limited naval drill involving communication and logistical coordination. Strategically, however, its geography makes it more consequential. Conducting joint activities in waters near Taiwan could signal China’s growing willingness to demonstrate its regional reach while also allowing Indonesia to strengthen practical naval cooperation with Beijing.
The timing is also significant as tensions over Taiwan remain high. For regional countries, the challenge is to expand security cooperation without becoming entangled in intensifying strategic competition between China, Taiwan and the United States.
