UK Eyes HSIA Terminal 3 in Strategic Aviation Play

Sadik Sagar, Dhaka:

The United Kingdom’s interest in ground handling operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s (HSIA) third terminal highlights a potential shift in bilateral engagement toward Bangladesh’s evolving aviation sector.

The proposal, conveyed by British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke during a meeting with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam, comes as Bangladesh advances efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure. With Terminal-3 expected to significantly expand passenger and cargo capacity, efficient ground handling services will be essential to ensuring smooth and competitive airport operations.

From a strategic perspective, the UK’s interest reflects both commercial opportunity and long-term positioning. British aviation firms bring extensive experience in airport services, and their involvement could introduce international standards in operational efficiency, safety, and customer service. For Bangladesh, this could help address persistent challenges such as turnaround times, cargo processing, and service quality.

The development also aligns with Dhaka’s ambition to establish itself as a regional aviation hub. Improved ground handling capabilities, combined with upgraded infrastructure, are key to attracting more international airlines and increasing transit traffic. Partnerships with established aviation markets like the UK may support this transition by strengthening operational capacity and global connectivity.

At the same time, the potential involvement of foreign operators in ground handling may raise policy considerations. The sector has traditionally been managed by domestic entities, and any shift toward external participation will require a careful regulatory approach to ensure fair competition and protect local stakeholders.

Beyond aviation, the discussions signal a broader effort to diversify Bangladesh-UK economic cooperation into high-value service sectors. Aviation, with its strong links to trade, tourism, and logistics, presents a significant opportunity for collaboration.

Overall, the UK’s interest in HSIA’s Terminal-3 reflects both an opportunity to enhance operational standards and a test of Bangladesh’s ability to balance foreign participation with domestic industry development.
