The New York City Mayor’s Office on Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) has outlined a series of policy priorities and initiatives aimed at strengthening support for immigrant communities, following a media roundtable held on March 26.

NYC Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Faiza N. Ali Outlines Priorities Under New Administration

The event marked the first formal engagement between newly appointed Commissioner Faiza N. Ali and ethnic media representatives, where she presented the agency’s strategic direction under the administration of Zohran K. Mamdani.

Commissioner Ali emphasized that rebuilding trust between immigrant communities and government institutions will be central to MOIA’s agenda. She noted that ensuring safe and equitable access to city services remains a priority, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations. She stated that immigrants should be able to access education, healthcare, and emergency services without fear, highlighting ongoing efforts to expand awareness of legal rights and public services.

These efforts are being supported through strengthened sanctuary city policies and expanded “Know Your Rights” outreach initiatives, including multilingual campaigns designed to reach a broad range of communities across the city.

A key component of MOIA’s strategy involves integrating immigrant communities into the city’s broader economic framework. The office is working to expand access to workforce development programs, public benefits, and small business support, aligning with the administration’s wider affordability agenda.

These initiatives are being coordinated in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice, led by Julie Su. Officials noted that immigrant workers play a critical role in New York City’s economy, and policies will focus on improving economic mobility and access to essential services.

MOIA also reaffirmed its commitment to providing accessible legal resources for immigrant residents. The city’s Immigration Legal Support Hotline continues to offer free, confidential assistance in more than 200 languages, as part of broader efforts to improve access to legal support.

Officials indicated that the initiatives outlined during the roundtable reflect a broader policy approach centered on inclusion, service accessibility, and economic participation, with continued outreach and institutional support expected in the coming months.
