An independent journalist in Bangladesh has reported being questioned by military intelligence authorities, raising fresh concerns over press freedom in the country.
Tanbirul Miraj Ripon, a journalist who contributes to international outlets including The Economist and Sky News, said he was summoned on March 30 by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) in Cox’s Bazar. According to Ripon, the questioning lasted approximately 30 minutes.
In a phone call with the Committee to Protect Journalists, Ripon said an officer asked about his family background and indicated that he might be required to report to the office again in the future.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns among press freedom advocates about the treatment of journalists in Bangladesh, particularly those working with international media organizations. Rights groups have repeatedly warned that summons, questioning, and surveillance can create a climate of intimidation that discourages independent reporting.
No official statement from Bangladeshi authorities regarding the reported questioning was immediately available.
The development comes amid broader global calls to uphold press freedom and ensure that journalists can operate without fear of harassment or reprisal.
