Sadik Sagar, Dhaka-
India has reiterated its support for a democratic, stable and inclusive Bangladesh, signalling continuity in bilateral relations at a time of political transition in Dhaka. The message came from Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma during an iftar reception in the capital, where government leaders, diplomats and prominent citizens gathered in a display of diplomatic engagement between the two neighbours.
Addressing the event, Verma emphasised that India has consistently supported a democratic and peaceful Bangladesh and would continue to do so. His remarks carry particular significance as Bangladesh navigates a new political phase following recent electoral developments and a change in government leadership. For New Delhi, maintaining stability in Bangladesh remains a key strategic priority given the extensive economic, security and cultural links shared by the two countries.
India and Bangladesh have developed one of the most extensive bilateral partnerships in South Asia over the past decade, encompassing trade, connectivity, energy cooperation and security coordination. Analysts say the Indian envoy’s remarks underline New Delhi’s interest in preserving policy continuity in these areas, regardless of domestic political shifts in Dhaka.
The High Commissioner also highlighted the historic foundation of the relationship, referring to the shared sacrifices during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which continues to shape public sentiment and diplomatic narratives in both countries. The historical memory of that cooperation often serves as a cornerstone of bilateral engagement and a reminder of the deep-rooted ties between the two societies.
The reception was attended by several members of the Bangladeshi government, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior ministers, reflecting Dhaka’s willingness to maintain constructive diplomatic relations with its largest neighbour.
Observers view the event as more than a ceremonial gathering. In diplomatic terms, such engagements provide an opportunity for both sides to reaffirm commitments to cooperation and signal stability to domestic and international audiences.
As Bangladesh seeks to strengthen its economic growth and regional engagement, India’s continued support for political stability and democratic governance could remain an important factor shaping the trajectory of bilateral relations in the coming years.
