Dhaka steps up diplomatic engagement with Washington over student deaths

Special Correspondent, Dhaka:

Bangladesh has stepped up diplomatic engagement with the United States following the killing of two Bangladeshi students, highlighting concerns over citizen safety abroad while also testing the responsiveness of bilateral law enforcement cooperation.

Authorities in Dhaka have urged Washington to ensure the safety and security of Bangladeshi nationals and students residing in the United States, even as investigations into the deaths of Zamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Bristy continue. Both were students at the University of South Florida, where officials have described the incident as isolated, with no broader threat to campus safety.

The response from Bangladesh reflects a dual-track approach: immediate consular support and ongoing diplomatic engagement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bangladesh, along with the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, has remained in contact with US authorities, including the US Department of State and investigative bodies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This coordination highlights the emphasis on information-sharing and procedural cooperation in such cases.

At the policy level, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam has called for a thorough investigation and due legal process. The government’s outreach also includes maintaining communication with the victims’ families and facilitating necessary arrangements, including repatriation.

The arrest of a suspect by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the initiation of legal proceedings indicate that the case is progressing within the US justice system. However, as the investigation remains ongoing, authorities have limited the release of details, which is consistent with standard legal practice.

Beyond the immediate developments, the incident has drawn attention to the broader context of student safety and consular preparedness. While US officials have indicated there is no continuing threat, such cases can still influence perceptions among international students and their families.

Overall, the situation is being addressed through established diplomatic and legal channels, with both sides maintaining communication as the investigation proceeds.
